BSc Honours, UPEI 2004
MSc 2008

Project focus: Ecotoxicology - Changes in gene expression and behaviour in killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) exposed to emamectin benzoate.

Christine is studying the effect that environmental toxins have on gene expression in multidrug resistant killifish. She will be focusing research on P-glycoproteins (P-gp), which pump xenobiotics such as toxins out of cells to avoid intracellular accumulation of these toxins.  The fish will be exposed to emamectin benzoate (a veterinary drug used on fish farms in Atlantic Canada) in the presence or absence of a P-gp inhibitor (synthetic musk, cyclosporin A). She is interested to see how exposure to the drug alone or in conjunction with a P-gp inhibitor will affect killifish behaviour and P-gp expression in different organ tissues of the fish.
